Lowering healthcare costs through action
At a time when people are forced to decide between paying for medications or groceries, they need real solutions, not just explanations. Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies hear that frustration — and it is driving our commitment to serve our members differently.
See how we're lowering healthcare costs
BCBS companies are taking action to lower costs and expand access, combining national reach with the personal care people expect.
Tackling the root causes of rising costs
Healthcare costs are shaped by many forces: hospital prices, prescription drugs, health insurance costs, advances in technology and changing regulations.
BCBS companies are advancing a roadmap to reduce healthcare costs by nearly $1 trillion over the next decade, built on commonsense solutions. By increasing transparency, strengthening competition and reducing unnecessary costs, these solutions will make healthcare more affordable for the people who rely on it.
When the cost of care goes down, the cost of coverage goes down. We will continue to work alongside policymakers to deliver real relief to patients and businesses.
Catching improper payments before costs rise
Every dollar lost to fraud, waste and abuse is a dollar taken from patient care. BCBS companies focus on stopping it early, using data and local insights to identify patterns others might miss.
Over the past five years, these efforts have prevented or recovered more than $22 billion.
When a fraud pattern shows up in one community, BCBS Special Investigations Units are often the first to spot it. Connected to a national network, they can act quickly to stop schemes early and protect people from higher costs.
More affordable medications through CivicaScript®
For people who rely on medications to manage conditions like diabetes or cancer, cost can be a barrier to staying healthy. That’s changing – and we’re leading. Through a partnership with CivicaScript and 23 BCBS companies that brings lower-cost generic drugs to market, targeting medications with high prices and limited competition.
And patients are saving up to $1,000 a year, while helping drive broader price reductions across the market.
We’re helping reshape the marketplace to bring more competition, lower costs and improve access for the people who need these medicines most.
Strengthening communities and expanding access to care
As community-based companies, we invest in local initiatives to improve the health of the communities we serve. That work focuses on the social and community resources outside of the doctor’s office that shape health, addressing challenges like food insecurity and transportation barriers.
As part of this commitment, BCBS companies invested more than $357 million in community health initiatives in 2024.
What’s next:
BCBS companies will keep working at every level of the system to bring down costs, because families need action. These efforts are part of a broader approach to improving affordability, expanding access and supporting better care. Building on deep local ties in communities across the country, BCBS companies are addressing the challenges people face in getting and affording care.
