Improving Access and Affordability

Published April 2, 2024

Marginalized communities continue to experience gaps in access to care because of cost. That’s why making health care more affordable and accessible for all Americans is fundamental to achieving health equity.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Association recommends four key priorities for improving access and affordability:

  1. Maximize supplemental benefits in Medicare Advantage that address social drivers of health;
  2. Remove barriers to Medicaid enrollment retention for eligible Americans;
  3. Increase access to insurance through tax credits that keep Marketplace plans affordable for those who need them; and
  4. Promote access to telehealth.

Read our key recommendations for making health care more affordable and accessible.

Here’s how one BCBS company is leading the way:

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Arizona has deployed “Community Assistors,” offering guidance to existing members during the Medicaid renewal process and helping them to maintain their coverage—regardless of which health plan they choose. As a result, “Community Assistors” hosted and or participated in more than 100 events across Arizona and there were nearly 13,000 Medicaid renewals directly from their efforts.
