AUGUSTA – Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Anthem) will be offering Medicare Supplement Plan G in Maine starting February 1, 2018. This announcement adds to the existing Medicare Supplement options Anthem offers individuals in the state, which include Plans A, F, and N. These plans will be available to seniors 65 years of age and older as well as others eligible for Medicare.
Medicare Supplement insurance plans fill the gaps in Original Medicare, such as deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. These plans allow members to visit any Medicare-approved providers or hospitals.
The addition of Plan G is another example of Anthem’s commitment to serving its members and giving them choices that fit their lives. The organization is privileged to continue its 75-plus-year history in the state and serves more than 300,000 in the state across all its insurance offerings.
Each Medicare Supplement plan is standardized and represented by a different letter. Plan G covers most of what’s covered in Plan F. The primary difference between Plan F and G is Plan G does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible (which is $183 in 2018). Both plans cover Medicare Part A (hospital) coinsurance and deductibles and Medicare Part B (medical) copayments and coinsurance, including Part B excess charges.
For these plans, Anthem offers members discounts for paying annually, having payments deducted directly and electronically from a bank account, or having more than one member living in the same household. Most Medicare Supplement members pair their plan with one of Anthem’s Part D plans, which cover prescription drugs.
Anthem also offers Medicare Advantage plans in Maine, including an HMO and a Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP). D-SNPs are designed for individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. These plans cover everything provided by Original Medicare and have some extra benefits, but require members to utilize a network of providers.
