Fearless Day Of Service Brings Out The Best In Company’s Employees

Columbia, S.C. – More than 350 BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina employees served in their communities Saturday, April 27, by participating in the company’s first Fearless Day of Service.

The inaugural event provided hands-on and skills-based volunteer services to nonprofit organizations in four South Carolina cities.

Volunteer events included:

  • Preparing meals for the Ronald McDonald House
  • Picking up trash on Percival Road in Columbia
  • Painting the health center at Epworth’s Children’s Home
  • Building a house for Habitat for Humanity
  • Replacing planks on the Palmetto Trail boardwalk
  • Installing smoke alarms for the American Red Cross
  • Assisting with the Special Olympics of South Carolina Bocce Bash event at Segra Park

In all, employees participated in 25 service projects across the state, including 19 in Columbia, three in Greenville, two in Florence and one in Charleston.

“Volunteering creates a sense of purpose and helps our employees by providing leadership skills and engagement outside of the office,” said Elizabeth Nkuo Johnson, BlueCross community relations manager. “For the nonprofit organization, receiving volunteer services can help them function more effectively and help spread the word about their respective organizations.”

In 2018, nearly 6,000 BlueCross employees logged 18,000 volunteer hours in support of established nonprofits, which translates into $444,420 in monetary value, according to Independent Sector, a national membership organization that tracks volunteerism.

BlueCross has offices in Columbia, Camden, Florence, Surfside Beach, Charleston, Greenville and others outside of South Carolina.
